Abstract

Oral hypoglycaemic agents, principally the sulphonylureas are today widely used in the treatment of patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) who make up 75–80% of the total diabetic population. The rationale for their use includes both the short term aims of relief of symptoms and biochemical correction and the longer term aspiration for protection against the long-term complications of the diabetic state, affecting eyes, kidneys, nerves and arteries. The short-term aims are certainly achievable, at least in the short run, but there is conflicting and incomplete evidence as to their preventive efficacy for diabetic complications. The advent of the oral agents has certainly not eradicated them.
