Subsets of rheumatoid factors determined by cross idiotypes

Antiglobulins, cryoglobulins and glomerulonephritis

Part of the book series: Developments in Nephrology ((DINE,volume 16))

Abstract

The first studies of cross idiotypes among rheumatoid factors involved monoclonal IgM anti globulins (mRF) obtained mainly from patients with mixed cryoglobulinemia (Kunkel, 1973). Two distinct idiotype groups were described, a major group WA comprising approximately 60% of those proteins and a minor group PO comprising 20%; 20% were uncharacterized. More recently a third rheumatoid factor cross idiotype has been defined, the Bla group, that is distinct from the PO and WA groups (Agnello, 1980). The rheumatoid factors (RF) in this group are unique in that in addition to reactivity with an antigen on IgG they cross react with an antigen on DNA-nucleoprotein.
