Abstract

Muscowy ducklings were infected with a very pathogenic parvovirus, Derzsy’s Disease Virus (DDV) and an adenovirus of a type frequently isolated from ducks (EDS 76) – (A-127). 3 groups of ducklings were respectively infected with DDV plus A-127, DDV, A-127, and a control group was raised under similar conditions. Pathological signs were observed and body weights recorded. Sera were collected weekly and analyzed for DDV and A-127 antibodies. In addition, in vitro assays of multiplication of these viruses on duck embryo fibroblasts were conducted. In ducklings, dual infection increases the mortality rate and depresses the body weight gain, as compared to infection with either virus alone. The humoral response did not appear to be influenced by dual infection. No difference in cytopathogenic effects were detected in vitro between single and dual infections.
