Image Data Compression Techniques Applicable to Image Networks

  • Chapter
Information Processing in Medical Imaging

Abstract

As the use of digitally acquired images increases in Medical Diagnosis, so there is also an increased requirement for Image Networks. At present, all images obtained in CT and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), DSA (digital subtraction angiography), and most images in nuclear medicine and ultrasound exist in digital form. It is anticipated that when appropriate captors have been developed, most conventional radiology will also have the capability of being performed digitally. Image processing for enhancement, expert system aided diagnosis, and digital long term storage will then be possible on most medical images. However, such facilities do not in themselves improve medical care or decrease costs, and may be considered to be of limited value. To be exploited properly, it is necessary that access to such digital images, and the means to manipulate them, be widely available. This supposes an image network (with appropriate image workstations).
