Abstract
The first attempts to revascularize an ischemic myocardium were made some 40 years ago. In 1943 Roberts arterialized the coronary sinus to bring oxygenated blood to the ischemic left ventricular muscle in animals. This was followed by Beck who performed in 1948 revascularization of the heart by a graft from a systemic artery to the coronary sinus. In 1948 Vineberg and Miller implanted the internal mammary artery into the left ventricle. The first successful aortocoronary vein bypass operation was performed by Garret in 1964 after Murray and Souvage had tested this method in animal experiments.
