Abstract

Clinical use of mechanical prosthetic valves was initiated as partial correction of aortic incompetence. In 1952 Hufnagel succeeded in inserting into the descending aorta an acrylic prosthesis containing a ball valve.[10] Function of this device for periods up to 18 years has been recorded. Many patients, possibly several hundred, underwent the Hufnagel operation before the direct approach to aortic valve surgery became feasible. The first open-heart operation with the aid of a heart-lung machine, performed by Gibbon in 1953, was the culmination of 20 years’ laboratory work, which subsequently led to the development of direct-vision surgery on the heart.
