Abstract

From its experimental beginnings in the 1960’s until today, there have been hundreds of thousands of valve replacements throughout the world. We at Broussais Hospital in Paris have operated on more than 10,000 since 1962. However, in spite of tremendous advances, we are still looking for the perfect valve as each of the existing valves has its own advantages and short-comings. The mechanical valves are long lived and mechanically solid, but they expose the patient to thrombo-embolic accidents. The bioprostheses generally need no anticoagulant therapy but present mechanical problems as they become rapidly calcified in younger patients and are progressively destroyed in adult patients thus requiring reintervention 8–10 years after their placement.
