Congenital Anomalies of the Esophagus: Esophageal Atresia and Tracheoesophageal Fistula

  • Chapter
International Practice in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Abstract

Esophageal atresia with distal tracheoesophageal fistula was first described in 1696 by Thomas Gibson.[1] However, it was not until 1939 that successful treatment was achieved simultaneously by Ladd[2] and Leven.[3] W The first successful primary repair was accomplished by Cameron Haight at the University of Michigan Medical Center in 1941.[4] In spite of all the advances that have occurred in neonatal surgery during the past thirty years, the technique of repair as originally described by Haight has not changed.
