Abstract
Hydatid cyst is a parasitic disease caused by the larval growth of Echinococcus granu losus. It occurs in endemic regions in people who have intimate contacts with sheep, dogs and other domestic animals. During a 25 year period, 1957–1982, we have treated 687 cases of hydatid cysts of the lung and thoracic organs (Table 36-1) and 878 operations had been performed (Table 36-2) at the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery of the Xinjiang Medical College Hospital, Urumuqi, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China. Our clinical experience in this series of cases will be presented in this chapter.
