Abstract

It is conceptually convenient to think of the evolution of heart surgery as falling into eras. The procedures characterizing each era have not necessarily become obsolete with succeeding eras. Many, indeed most, of the techniques temporally characterizing each era continue to have an important continuing use, e.g. closure of patent ducti, correction of coarctation of the aorta, pericardiectomy etc. We must also recognize that isolated (and often disappointing) adventures took place before their time or era, e.g. early experiences with surgery for mitral stenosis.
