Abstract

The mechanisms of urinary continence and incontinence in postprostatectomy patients have for many years been an important point of interest. Traditional anatomical concepts of the sphincter function have been rejected gradually as neurophysiological and urodynamic investigations were introduced. Surgery on the bladder neck and the prostate has provided even more knowledge to the anatomy of the continence mechanism. In order to facilitate the understanding of the continence mechanisms following surgery a short review of the anatomical structure of the bladder and urethra is necessary.
