Abstract
As we hold this meeting, we are completing the first quarter-century of realization of the many biological effects of aflatoxicosis. Nearly 10 years after the initial description of widespread aflatoxic disease among animals in Europe, three separate investigations pointed to suppression of immunologic responsiveness after exposure to aflatoxin. Gallikeev [11] showed suppressed antibody formation to typhoid toxoid in mice; Pier and Heddleston [21] reported suppression in acquired immunity to P. multocida infection in turkeys when aflatoxin was given orally during or after immunization. And finally, Savel et al. [29] reported suppression of lymphoblastogenic response of human lymphocytes after in vitro exposure to aflatoxin. In the ensuing 15 years over 100 scientific reports have delt with some manifestation of the effects of aflatoxin, and eventually other mycotoxins, on immunity and resistance to disease. These reports have been the subject of several reviews including an extensive recent review in 1983 [23].
