Abstract
One underlying theme of the preceding chapters concerns the importance of decision-oriented researchers developing alternatives to existing professional practices in order to better meet specific types of information needs of system managers. In our experience, one such alternative that may be profitably pursued involves program documentation. In this chapter we will discuss what is meant by program documentation. We identify kinds of management information needs to which this research strategy is responsive. Evidence from two case histories will illustrate how documentation works. Finally, we will discuss methodological problems associated with this approach. (Portions of this chapter have been adapted from Bickel, 1984.)
