Abstract
The need for an approval scheme for personnel carrying out underwater inspection has been accepted by governments, certification authorities, offshore operating companies (operators) and the underwater services companies (contractors). Individual operators and certifying authorities have carried out their own approval schemes for assessing the competence of inspection divers, and CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Weldment Inspection Personnel) introduced an examination scheme for underwater inspection personnel as “Phase 7: Certification of Diver Inspectors” in 1982. The examination included both theory (written) papers requiring multiple-choice and essay-style answers as well as an in-water practical examination carried out by divers on an underwater structure controlled by CSWIP and containing various test pieces and examples of defects.
