Technetium Discharges into the Environment

  • Chapter
Book cover Technetium in the Environment

Abstract

Technetium has some 15 known isotopes, ranging from Tc-92 to Tc-107; none of these isotopes are stable but three of them are very long-lived, viz. Tc-97 (T 1/2: 2·6 × 106y), Tc-98 (T l/2: 1·5 × 106y) and Tc-99 (T 1/2: 2·1 × 105y). Although produced in nature by spontaneous fission of uranium-238, the major source of the long-lived isotopes stems from fission in nuclear weapons and in reactors; the use of technetium in medicine makes a relatively small contribution.
