Polymer Melt and Glass: Thermodynamic and Dynamic Aspects

  • Chapter

Synopsis

We discuss the following topics: 1. The scaled pressure-volume-temperature surface of the equilibrium melt. 2. The temperature and pressure dependence of the melt viscosity: Scaling and the relation to the thermodynamic scaling parameters. 3. The glass: Quasi-equilibrium aspects. 4. Molecular kinetics of physical aging processes in the glass.

A connecting link between the four subjects is indicated by a particular free volume function, its dependence on the state variables and, in the glass, formation history and aging time.
