Synopsis
In diluted solutions, macromolecules may form reversible associations which change drastically the rheological behaviour. Assuming the formation of one to one associations of 2 macromolecules according to the mass action law, the extinction angle, the birefringence and the average extension ratio of flexible macromolecules in solution have been calculated as a function of the concentration and the shear rate. It is shown that the associations display some unusual effects and that the birefringence may exceed widely that of the individual macromolecules at same concentration. Some comparisons with experimental results are presented.
