Abstract
Recognition of a link between the thyroid and the eye as is seen in Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO) has been attributed to Parry, Graves and von Basedow but observations relating exophthalmos to goitre can be found as early as the 12th century. Despite the growth of a vast literature, considerable uncertainty exists regarding many aspects of this potentially distressing and disfiguring clinical condition, particularly with regard to its pathogenesis and hence to the management of patients with the problem. Many excellent reviews providing an historical perspective and emphasizing the clinical aspects of GO have appeared in recent years1–3. This chapter will therefore focus particularly on information relating to the pathogenesis of GO.
