Abstract
Much of the confusion that has arisen from studies of the genetics of diabetes mellitus arises from the fact that, until recently, diabetes was regarded as a single disease. It is now clear that there are at least two major types of diabetes which are aetiologically distinct, although they have similar long-term complications. The recent WHO classification of diabetes includes these two categories:
-
(1)
Type I, insulin dependent or ketosis prone;
-
(2)
Type II, non-insulin dependent or non-ketosis prone.
