Abstract
Included under the heading of connective tissue diseases is a group of heterogeneous conditions of unknown aetiology. Although the connective tissues are chiefly affected, it is not clear if collagen is the principal target tissue involved. Immunological phenomena abound, involving mainly the production of autoantibodies. Patients with one form of connective tissue disease may develop other forms. Some animals develop spontaneous disease; for example, the New Zealand black/white (NZ B/W) mouse develops systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren’s syndrome-like lesions. Significant associations with the major histocompatibility genes are found in several diseases.
