Obstetric Aspects of Perinatal Addiction

  • Chapter
Drug Use in Pregnancy: Mother and Child

Abstract

Despite the conspicuous absence of national and regional data on the numbers of addicted individuals (male or female), it is widely acknowledged that substance abuse has pervaded American society to an extent unparalleled in the history of this country. Reports of individuals addicted to traditional ‘hard’ as well as so-called ‘recreational’ drugs continually appear in the popular media. No socioeconomic level of society or racial or ethnic group has been spared, and the number of addicted pregnant women who have come to medical facilities for delivery in the past decade has risen substantially.
