Immunologic Function and AIDS in Drug-exposed Infants

  • Chapter
Drug Use in Pregnancy: Mother and Child

Abstract

Drug abuse is associated with a variety of infectious complications. In adults many of these complications are attributable to the use of contaminated materials, the lack of sterile technique for administering intravenous drugs and possibly to the drugs themselves. Other complications are the result of the abnormal lifestyle, such as prostitution, which is required to support the addiction. Infection in infants of drug-addicted mothers is a newly appreciated clinical problem but there is little actual documentation of it in the literature and even less information on the etiology of the susceptibility to infections. This review will examine the information available on the incidence of infections and the possible etiology of the increased risk of infections in drug-abusing patients and their offspring.
