Abstract
A human fetus is yoked to its mother in a nurturant bond in order to obtain the nutrients necessary for growth and development. However, it is through this same avenue that come substances which place the unborn infant at risk for disorders of growth and development. Alcohol, narcotics and other drugs are known to cross the placental barrier and to cause potentially injurious effects in the development of the embryo and fetus.
