Abstract
Infants born to chemically abusing mothers are at risk for deviations in behavioral and intellectual development, just as they are at risk for deviations in physical development. One of the major objectives of a perinatal addiction program is to assess the effects of intrauterine drug exposure on the developmental outcome of these infants. A second objective is to evaluate the psychological status of the mother, especially as that status may affect her relationship with her infant. These assessments of mother and child fulfill a twofold purpose:
-
1.
They provide a clinical understanding of the psychological adjustments of the mother and child, which may become the basis for appropriate intervention.
-
2.
They help to build a fund of research information on a high-risk group about whom we know very little.
