The Secretion and Absorption of Fetal Lung Liquid

  • Chapter
Physiology of the Fetal and Neonatal Lung

Abstract

At the birth of a mammal dramatic changes must occur if the liquid-filled lungs of the fetus are to be transformed into an air-filled organ capable of supporting gas exchange. The aim of this paper is to examine some of the physiological mechanisms which bring about this metamorphosis, in particular those concerned with ion transport across the pulmonary epithelium.
