Abstract
Butorphanol is a synthetic opiate of the cyclorphan series which possesses both narcotic agonist and antagonist properties. The drug has been characterized pharmacologically and clinically in humans as an analgesic and as a component of balanced anaesthesia, and in dogs it has been used as an antitussive agent.
In order to determine the clinical utility of butorphanol as an analgesic in horses, a clinical and Pharmacological evaluation of the agent was undertaken in horses. Analgesic activity was demonstrable in a dose- dependent manner in horses, the intravenous administration of 0.1 mg/kg providing a justifiable clinical dosage. In double-blind clinical studies in horses presenting with acute abdominal pain, the analgesic effectiveness of butorphanol at a dosage of 0.1 mg/kg was confirmed.
