Abstract

In a first clinical study (Gonsette et al. 1977), a short-term (2–3 weeks) intensive immunosuppression was induced by intravenous injection of high doses of cyclophosphamide (CY) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with a remitting-progressive form. After a follow-up for 2-6 years, it appeared that a marked reduction of the annual relapse rate (ARR) as well as a stabilization of neurological and functional disability were observed respectively in 70 and 62% of the patients. The same beneficial effect of intensive CY immunosuppression on the progressive form of the disease has been observed by Hommes et al. (1980) and Hauser et al. (1983).
