Abstract
The determination of myelin basic protein in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can be used for the detection of demyelination. Thus acute exacerbations of the disease Multiple Sclerosis, and damage of myelin upon cerebrovascular accidents can be assessed (Cohen et al., 1980, Whitaker, 1977) When the determination of MBP is applied to sera, only extremely severe demyelination can be discriminated from the normal state (Palfreyman et al., 1978). On the other hand Paterson et al., 1981, by applying their dual dilution RIA, showed the occurence of MBP serum factors. The nature and the concentrations of these MBP serum factors were related to the activity of the diseases Multiple Sclerosis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis. In our study on the determination of MBP in CSF (Nagelkerken et al.,1983) we showed that the amount of MBP in CSF determined by a competitive radioimmunoassy corresponded to that determined by a two-site immunoradiometric assay. In this study the results of the determination of MBP in sera by our radioimmunoassays are reported.
