Cytotoxic Antibodies in Multiple Sclerosis

  • Chapter
Multiple Sclerosis Research in Europe

Abstract

Terasaki et al., (1970) demonstrated lymphocytotoxic antibodies (LCA) or lymphocytotoxins detectable at 15°C in the serum of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Since then, cold LCA have been reported in many diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, various neurological diseases including Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis (Lisak et al., 1979) and multiple sclerosis (MS) (Kuwert and Bertrams, 1972). The present study was undertaken to further define the cold and warm LCA as well as the cold and warm monocytotoxic antibodies in MS sera and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and to investigate possible correlations between these cytotoxic activities and various clinical and biological parameters (Rumbach et al., 1982).
