Abstract

The current view of most workers in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS) research is that the disease is a) autoimmune in nature and b) causally related to a defect in immunoregula- tion. The latter belief has, in many laboratories, stimulated a search for abnormalities in various arms of the immune resĀ¬ponse. Their quest has been successful, and a plethora of abĀ¬normalities in immune function in MS have been reported in the literature. The question that must now be asked is which of the defects detected are genuine manifestations of the disease and which are byproducts of technical manipulation.
