Clinical Studies in Multiple Sclerosis

  • Chapter
Multiple Sclerosis Research in Europe

Abstract

Clinical studies in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have a long tradition, the first clinical description being published over a century ago. But even earlier than this, a patient with MS, Augustus d’Este, recorded his symptoms in a detailed diary (Firth 1948). D’Este’s handwriting gives more accurate account of his state of health than any medical description could: In 1822 it was extremely legible, but by 1848, shortly before his death, ataxia had deteriorated his penmanship considerably.
