Injury on the Road and in the Air

Abstract

Patterns of injury are changing continuously as man devises new modes of transport, new firearms and other injurious devices. Seat-belt legislation has significantly reduced the mortality and morbidity from head injury to the occupants of vehicles1. However, the motorcycle continues to exert a constant toll of death amongst young men. The use of crash helmets has reduced injuries to the skull but serious injuries continue to occur to other parts of the body. Visceral and bony injuries lead to extensive fatal haemorrhage or to fat embolism. Fatal fat embolism can also occur following trauma to fat in the subcutaneous tissues of the unprotected limbs of motorcycle pillion passengers.
