Abstract
All sorts of sporting activity carry some risk: some such as hang-gliding, horse-riding, marathon running, boxing and others carry more risk than many. It would be a sad day if people were deterred from leisure activities by fear of injury. Equally it is important to know the risk and take adequate precautions. Sudden death in men over 40 whilst playing squash racquets is notorious to coroner’s pathologists. Sudden death in players of rugby football and referees with a mean age of about 30 years is another well recognized event1. Competitive sports are more dangerous because the individual cannot determine his own pace but again joggers can occasionally reduce their blood pressures to zero.
