Abstract

At scales much longer than the generation times of the organisms (weeks to months) it is possible to observe large scale patterns in the distribution of individual species and of biomass in space and time. Physical processes operating at these scales include seasonal thermoclines, persistent fronts, rings and eddies. Biomass accumulations and persistent physical features lead to large scale changes in the supply and demand of macronutrients (particularly N,P,Si) and strong seasonal changes in the soluble pool sizes of such elements.
