Abstract

Palaeomagnetism initiated the revolutionary breakthrough that occurred next, but this time it was magnetic reversals that were to provide the key. As explained in Chapter 3, the direction of the magnetism in some rocks is the complete opposite of that expected and, until this time, reversals had been regarded as no more than a nuisance in studies of polar wandering and continental drift.
