Abstract

In 1983 we brought an inoculum of Spirulina platensis (originally from the Lake Chad area of Africa) to the Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ) and started outdoor cultures. Up to that time, there were in Brazil only small laboratory cultures existing in São Paulo and in Rio de Janeiro. The activities at PUC/RJ are ongoing and have the character of experimental installations for investigating and developing both biological and technological details. Meanwhile two private industrial companies are producing Spirulina platensis in Brazil based on the cultivation procedure developed at PUC/RJ.
