Progress in the genetics and breeding of economic seaweeds in China

Abstract

In China, studies on seaweed genetics and the breeding of new varieties were initiated in 1958 by the Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica, and the Shandong College of Oceanology. Since their inception, these studies have been closely related to the cultivation of Laminaria (Fang, 1983b; Fang & Dai, 1984), and new varieties introduced to Laminaria farms are now grown in large quantities in North China. In recent years, studies have been conducted also on the genetics and breeding of Undaria pinnatifida (Fang et al., 1979; Fang, 1983a) and Porphyra (Zhang et al., 1985). A brief summary of the genetic research and breeding progress achieved since 1958 is given below.
