Experiments on Spirulina culture on waste-effluent media and at the pilot plant

Abstract

Massive cultivation of Spirulina in waste-effluent media could improve the prospects for industrial production of this biomass, considering that the culture medium is an important factor in the production cost of the algal product. Liquors from biogas effluent have been used as a nutrient substrate for intensive microalgal culture (Chung et al., 1978; Soong, 1980; Ayala & Bravo, 1984). In addition waste stum — a liquor from industrial yeast production — and percolated liquids from a sanitary garbage dump containing various nutrient elements available for microalgae were used in culture media in this study. The biomass obtained from intensive cultivation of Spirulina in these wastewater media could be used as a pigment-protein supplement in animal feed and as raw material for certain chemicals.
