Summary
Sex pheromones have recently been demonstrated for several species of Trichoptera. This paper presents an overview of techniques that have been used for studying long-range sex attractants of adult caddisflies. Experimental techniques for demonstrating the presence of sex pheromones, identifying the site of pheromone production, and analyzing and interpreting data from field bioassays are presented. Experimental design, adult flight behavior(s), environmental factors, and population phenology may confound interpretation of field data. Sex pheromones are useful in elucidating systematic, ecological, and behavioral relationships among the Trichoptera.
