Automated Integration of Mineral Resource Data by Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence

  • Chapter
Quantitative Analysis of Mineral and Energy Resources

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 223))

Abstract

Resource assessment involves an overwhelming amount of information of diverse nature and format. One of the main challenges is trying to represent a problem in a computational form either qualitatively or quantitatively. This paper describes the application of image processing and artificial intelligence for the integration of data from maps and other forms of digital imagery.

Particular attention is given to the interface between image processing and expert systems. The computer representation and processing of images, expert-system rules and their associated weights, are exemplified to introduce the requirements of more comprehensive and “humane” systems in which high-level queries bring integration from the simple standardization of data formats to intelligent interaction between multiple data sets. Model-driven and data-driven approaches are discussed.
