Abstract

The analysis of the composition of galactic cosmic rays gives fundamental clues to solve the problem of their genesis. The present conclusion that the bulk of the cosmic-ray nuclei originate in F to M stars appears to be independently supported by studies of stellar outer atmospheres and activity. We review our current knowledge on “solarlike activity” and its relation with stellar parameters at various locations of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. This “solar-stellar connection” emphasizes the role of solar studies in helping to understand the pre-acceleration states of the history of galactic cosmic rays.
