Cosmic Ray Bombardment of Solids in Space

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 220))

Abstract

Some aspects of the interaction of cosmic rays with solids in space are presented. We first give a short description of experimental results on some effects induced in frozen gases by impinging ions because they constitute the solid base for any reliable astrophysical application. We show the important role played in giant molecular clouds by cosmic rays for the production of molecular hydrogen, the cornerstone of interstellar chemistry. A method to obtain suitable information on the almost unknown spectrum of low energy cosmic rays outside the heliosphere is also presented.
