Abstract

It is generally accepted that the electronic component of cosmic rays must be of galactic origin, is the source of the galactic radio background, and possibly, or even probably, originates in supernovae and/or supernova remnants. Therefore in consideration of this electronic component, we review the general history and observed properties of supernovae with concentration on the more recent results or radio supernovae, the observed properties of supernova remnants of both the centrally driven and shock driven subclasses, and the general properties of the galactic non-thermal radio background. These results are then compared with the measured properties of the e component of cosmic rays in the solar neighborhood. It is found that even though this component of the cosmic rays is a rather minor one in terms of either number or energetics, it is the component which appears best explained by known phenomena at the present time.
