An overview of Cosmic Ray Research and its relation to other areas of High Energy Astrophysics is presented. Particular attention is paid to providing a summary of current results on the composition, acceleration and propagation of the cosmic radiation — topics which will be discussed in greater detail in other papers in this volume.
