Abstract

Living anionic lithium-ended polymer is transformed into a soluble Ziegler-Natta Ti (III)/Li-based system. The latter exhibits a high efficiency as at least 80% of C-Ti bonds participate in the homo- and co-polymerization of ethylene and propene, leading to vinylicolefinic type block copolymers.

The “living character” of the Ziegler-Natta complexes is deduced from both the macromolecular features of the poly-olefinic blocks and the kinetic studies of C2H4 and C3H6 polymerizations.

From all the kinetic data obtained and on the basis of a two-steps propagation mechanism, the rate determining step is found to be complexation for C3H6 polymerization and insertion in the case of C2H4.
