Abstract

Rotationally inelastic collisions of Ar-O2, Ar-N2, Ar-CO and Ar-HCl are studied in a crossed molecular beams time of flight experiment.

The Ar-02 and Ar-N2 scattering shows the excitation of very large rotational quantum transitions. In Ar-HCl collisions, in contrast, the scattering is prevailingly elastic, or restricted to small △j≲2 transitions.

The Ar-O2 and the Ar-HC1 molecular beam scattering results are used for a comparison with the best available spectroscopically determined interaction potentials for these molecules.
