Astrophysical Jets and Their Engines

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 208))

Abstract

In this lecture I shall discuss the observational evidence relevant to the speeds of jets in radio galaxies and quasars. My conclusion is that the outer jets of weak (FR I) sources have non-relativistic speeds, while jets in strong (FR II) sources have speeds comparable with the speed of light, and perhaps very close to the speed of light.
