Abstract
Effective dipoles in charged monolayers and permanent dipoles in neutral ones are shown to have a drastic effect on the structure and phase transitions of insoluble Langmuir monolayers. These long-range and repulsive dipolar interactions stabilize undulating phases in thermodynamic equilibrium. Results are presented for two cases: (i) Close to a liquid-gas critical point, (ii) At low temperatures. Possible implications of the former on the liquid-gas transition and of the latter to the liquid-solid and liquid expanded-1iquid condensed transitions are discussed. In an ionic solution, the undulation periodicity can be controlled by the strength of the ionic solution.
