Abstract

The title of this lecture course is over-ambitious, since there is no way in which a coherent and self-contained presentation of the statistical theory of liquids could fit into just four lectures. A more modest goal which we hope to achieve is to familiarize the audience with some of the fundamental concepts and tools of the theory of liquids and ionic solutions which will be used by other lecturers throughout this School, and to provide a guide to the literature. The main emphasis of the present lectures will be on the static and dynamic correlations in liquids, as can be probed by spectroscopic techniques like neutron or light scattering.
