Giant Outbursts of the Eta Carinae - P Cygni Type

Abstract

It is time for us to contemplate more dramatic instabilities! Certain very massive stars, including η Car and P Cyg, give observational hints that their most crucial mass loss occurs in giant eruptions. During such an event, the mass loss rate can be of the order of 0.1 M⨀ yr-1 for several years. We do not yet understand this phenomenon, partly because most relevant theoretical work has been devoted instead to more familiar, less dramatic stellar winds.
